Family group says fast-food giant agrees not to promote 'gay' agenda

A corporate executive for McDonald's restaurants who had been on board of directors of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has stepped down following a boycott of the chain organized by the pro-family American Family Association.

McDonald's officials confirmed today to WND that Richard Ellis, who had been named to the "gay" chamber board after McDonald's contributed $20,000 to the organization, "made a personal decision to step down" after he accepted a new position with McDonald's Restaurants of Canada.

McDonald's officials also told AFA the company has no plans to renew its membership in the special interest group when it expires in December.

"We appreciate the decision by McDonald's to no longer support political activity by homosexual activist organizations," AFA chairman Donald E. Wildmon said in a prepared statement.

WND reported in May when McDonald's signed onto the "gay" agenda, and one executive for the fast-food chain later accused Christian advocates of the traditional family of being motivated by "hate."

The AFA called for a boycott and established a website to facilitate the effort. However, AFA officials today said the boycott was being called off after the company notified the AFA Ellis has resigned from the board and "his seat on the board will not be replaced by McDonald's."

"McDonald's stated that the company would remain neutral in the culture war surrounding homosexual marriage," the AFA said.

The pro-family group noted that in an e-mail to McDonald's franchise owners, the company said, "It is our policy to not be involved in political and social issues. McDonald's remains neutral on same sex marriage or any 'homosexual agenda' as defined by the American Family Association."

Seen the latest AP poll? One point. Statistically tied. I ain't real big on polls, since the liberal media pays for them and interprets them. But this is Associated (with Obama to win) Press! Dead heat. Maybe the truth is John McCain and Sarah Palin have a 10-point lead and a 1-point Obama edge was as far as AP could fudge the numbers without getting caught. It ain't bad news, that's for sure.

John Murtha's big mouth has even got the Pennsylvania rednecks going for McCain-Palin. First he calls his own voters racists. Oops. So he apologizes and said he meant to say rednecks. Oops II. When you're in a hole, Big John, first thing to do is stop digging. And keep your big mouth shut.

I hear Obama had Joe Biden and John Murtha locked in the same room until after the election.

Let's just call it the Revenge of the Rednecks, in Pennsylvania and all across the "bitter" country.

The Noo Yawk Times just don't "get" us rednecks. Take redheaded Maureen Dowd, who gives us the penetrating inside story of why Colin Powell decided at the last minute to endorse Obama. It ain't a black thing, Maureen assures, it's because Powell is such a great patriot.

And according to Dowd, Powell stepped into the fray because he was forced to due to "the slimy tenor of the race against Obama." Say what?

The only "slimy tenor" I've read in the Noo Yawk Times is directed toward John McCain, his wife Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin, all three of whom have been subjected to totally false hit jobs for the great sins of being white, male, female and Republicans, but worst of all for challenging the long-planned coronation of NYT's favorite son, Emperor Barack Hussein Obama the 1st, Lord of the Entire Universe, Amen.

And of course, we also have the "slimy tenor" of Dowd trying to use Powell to wipe away doubts of Obama's patriotism and religion(s).

He told Tom Brokaw that he was troubled by what other Republicans, not McCain, had said: “ ‘Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.’ Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim. He’s a Christian. He’s always been a Christian..."

...He got a mass e-mail from a man wanting to spread the word that Obama was reading a book about the end of America written by a fellow Muslim.

“Holy cow!” Powell thought. Upon checking Amazon.com, he saw that it was a reference to Fareed Zakaria, a Muslim who writes a Newsweek column and hosts a CNN foreign affairs show. His latest book is “The Post-American World.”

Lemme get this straight. Powell says Obama's "always been a Christian"? Even when his atheist mama and atheist daddy were raising him? Even when as a kid he was enrolled as a Muslim in a Muslim school in Indonesia? Even when his own choice as a grown adult for a "Christian" church in Chicago was the race-baiting, black-liberation-theology of not-rev. Jeremiah "G-- D---- America!" Wright? I suppose that's the same way that Obama's "always been for gun rights" despite a voting record that never includes a single, solitary pro-gun-rights vote and a political career from the get-go trying to ban all firearms, ammunition and gun-ownership rights? Funny how often "always" comes up with Obama. Every time he flip-flops, he was "always" a flop and never a flip. Down the memory hole.

And instead of being concerned that our "next President" is reading a Muslim book about "the end of America," we should salute his patriotism? Pardon me if I don't stand with my hand over my heart.

Powell also adds this knee-slapper: "Experience is helpful,” he says, “but it is judgment that matters." Is that sorta like the great judgment that Powell showed in talking President Bush the 1st into stopping the invasion of Iraq so Saddam Hussein could rebuild his army to fight again?

Meanwhile, way down here in bitter, backwoods redneck country, "experts" are predicting Obama will win North Carolina, my home state, which hasn't been carried by a Democrat presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976. I was one of those fools in '76 who fell for Carter's southern drawl and "born-again" credentials. Last Democrat I've voted for and the "Worst President Evah" who helped turn me into a former Democrat.

I lived through Jimmy Carter the 1st, stagflation, inflation and incompetence. Now here comes another smooth talker who's "always been a Christian" and has even less experience than the one-term governor of Georgia. Spare me from the Second Coming of Jimmy Carter.

Now I'm one of those "certified Republicans" Washington Post writer Kevin Merida refers to in his report on North Carolina's New Blues.

Process engineer Jeff Roberts and cattle farmer Lonnie Carpenter both were work-dusty and tired but boisterous, Roberts a certified Republican who brought Carpenter with him. He boasted of turning his Democratic buddy to the other side, but it wasn't clear that had taken much of a push.

"I don't think he has the guts to handle the job," said Carpenter. "I think he is a mouth full of 'gimme' and a whole lot of 'much obliged.' He hollers 'changes, changes,' and you never hear what the change is."

Take the war in Iraq, he said. "I think wanting to cut back troops, setting a deadline, that's bullcrap."

Roberts agreed. "War is ugly," he said. "War is dirty. You level the city, they learn. I don't think that country knows what freedom is, so they don't know how to accept freedom. McCain has been there and done that. He knows what it is to be locked up. I think McCain will fight for his people."

Democrat Lonnie Carpenter sounds like Joe the plumber to me, one of them good ol' boys who ain't as stupid as Obama thinks he is. And who did Merida find that's supporting Obama here? Let's see, we got a homeless "former" drug addict who spent 14 years in jail for murder and just got kicked out of a fleabag motel in Charlotte. We got a Hispanic hot dog lady selling her wares from a street cart in downtown Charlotte. We got a fella runs a black barbershop. We got a young guy who just cut his first rap CD. Whodathunk it? Obama supporters.

And Merida says "Pockets of political enthusiasm keep surfacing in the most unlikely places" for Obama? A fleabag motel, an inner-city sidewalk, a black barber shop and a rap recording studio? What unlikely places to find Obama supporters. Sounds like typical ACORN territory to me.

I bet Merida thought he'd found another Obama voter when he met Pam Demarest in Charlotte, a full-time nurse also working a part-time job as a community college teacher to make up the pay lost when her husband was laid off, plus putting a son through college. Wrong.

"I don't like Obama," she said. "When you look at him, when you see him speaking, some of the looks he gives are condescending. He doesn't come off as somebody I would trust. He just doesn't. Sometimes you can't give a reason for that."

Demarest voices concerns I've heard a lot. Folks here like McCain and they love Sarah Palin, but they're going to vote "against" Obama. I've done a windshield survey of my town and 30-minute drive to work in a neighboring county and I've seen many McCain-Palin yard and road signs and very few Obama-Biden signs. It's not a scientific poll and does not include driving through the "projets" as they are known here.

But I've also heard from more than a few yellow-dog Democrats who've never voted for a Republican in their lives and they're saying "Not only no, but hell no, I ain't voting for Obama!" Maybe the big cities and the ivory towers will go to Obama here, but not the rednecks. And though I'm sure the black vote will be overwhelming for Obama, I don't think he can win here without the yellow-dog Democrat rednecks.

And when Obama loses, all us rednecks will be called racists. But it ain't a black thing, it's a redneck thing. It don't matter what color you are, if you come across as "condescending" and untrustworthy to us rednecks, you can promise us the moon, but we just ain't buying any. Blacks, big-city liberals and college eggheads can’t outvote all us rednecks here in North Carolina. Ain’t gonna happen, hide and watch.

Judging from the last couple of days, the MSM media seems more impressed by the Powell endorsement than voters do. The “Joe the Plumber” bump in the polls for McCain which began in earnest with last week’s debate seems, for now, to have exceeded the Powell bump.

But the challenge remains a daunting one for McCain. He trails in national polls and a series of state polls and is being vastly outspent on last minute campaign ads. Is there time for him to pull it out?

Conservatives beg to differ. The voters will settle the matter in two weeks. One surprising ray of hope for McCain: with the most unpopular president and the worst economy in generations he remains in the thick of the race. That alone tells us something about voters’ comfort level with his opponent.

Two "Joes" outranks one "Colin": McCain-Palin win!

Out of commission on my home blogging computer for almost a week and I missed blogging. Hopefully all is fixed now. Did some "troll" hit me with a bug? Possible. You're not paranoid if folks really are out to get you. And Obama and his trolls and leftwing nuts are playing very dirty.

Question: Do two "Joes" outrank one "Colin"? Out here in redneck country, the answer is HELL yes! Between Joe the plumber and Joe the Biden (Charles Krauthammer said Biden is a Republican plant and I think he's right) the two "Joes" have been playing havoc with Obama's coronation. Joe the plumber is a hero because he doesn't want Obama spreading his hard-earned wealth around to the 40 percent of folks who don't pay taxes in the first place. And Joe the Biden is the unlikely hero who opened his big mouth and admitted Obama ain't ready for prime time. Vote for Obama and get your international crises early and often! Who's up first? Ahmanutjob in Iran? Chavez-Khrushchev in Venezuela? Big Daddy Kim in North Korea? Putin-Stalin in Russia?

And what's a Colin Powell endorsement worth? Not squat to us rednecks who never liked him in the first place since he talked President Bush the 1st into pulling the plug on the first invasion of Iraq just when we had Saddam Hussein by the short hairs and shoulda finished him off.

If not for Colin Powell getting squeamish about victory, there would have been no war in Iraq.

And tell me just one thing the man accomplished as Secretary of State in President Bush the 2nd's first term. I'm waiting. Just like I'm also waiting for someone to tell me exactly what kind of executive experience Barack Obama has. Still waiting. Time's up. Same answer. Big zero.

So liberal pollsters and liberal media keeps on lying like a rug and Sarah and John are gonna shock 'em all in two weeks. I love the smell of burning nutroots rage on the morning of Nov. 5.

Kristol to McCain: Don't Worry, Be Happy

Charles Krauthammer has written that John McCain has already exceeded his "two Hail Mary's per campaign rule." McCain tossed one long TD when he backed the surge in Iraq in the dark days of 2006. Everybody but McCain, President Bush and General Petraeus said it wouldn't work. It did and the Iraq war turned around miraculously. Hail Mary II was picking Sarah Palin from obscurity as his VP choice.

Despite the MSM's wolfpack attacks, the American people still love Sarah amidst all the bad press so Palin is Hail Mary TD No. 2.

Since then, nothing has gone well for McCain and even the economy has conspired against him with the housing credit crisis sucking all the air out of the campaign. With the constant media drumbeat of the impending return of the Great Depression, panic is infecting voters as well as the stock market. But the polls are still tight, showing a slight trend toward McCain and away from Obama's "inevitable win." Today's record surge on Wall Street may mean the sun is shining again on McCain. I can hope.

Yet William Kristol says it's time for one more Hail Mary from McCain: Fire the Campaign and do the unthinkable, go positive to voting day.

What McCain needs to do is junk the whole thing and start over. Shut down the rapid responses, end the frantic e-mails, bench the spinning surrogates, stop putting up new TV and Internet ads every minute. In fact, pull all the ads — they’re doing no good anyway. Use that money for televised town halls and half-hour addresses in prime time.

And let McCain go back to what he’s been good at in the past — running as a cheerful, open and accessible candidate. Palin should follow suit. The two of them are attractive and competent politicians. They’re happy warriors and good campaigners. Set them free.

Provide total media accessibility on their campaign planes and buses. Kick most of the aides off and send them out to swing states to work for the state coordinators on getting voters to the polls. Keep just a minimal staff to help organize the press conferences McCain and Palin should have at every stop and the TV interviews they should do at every location. Do town halls, do the Sunday TV shows, do talk radio — and invite Obama and Biden to join them in some of these venues, on the ground that more joint appearances might restore civility and substance to the contest.

Most on the right are saying McCain has been too much Mr. Nice Guy, time to take to take the gloves off. The left, hypocrites all, are accusing him of running the worst scorched-earth campaign since Attila the Hun, ignoring all the bile spewing daily from their own ranks.

J.R. Dunn of American Thinker is of the "right" persuasion, urging a campaign closer based on Obama's Three Strikes consisting of Bomb-Throwin' Bill Ayers and his equally psychotic wife Bernadine Dohrn, ACORN voter fraud and The New Party socialist revolution.

A terrorist bomber, what may be the largest vote-fraud operation in history, and a political party calling for a socialist revolution in the United States. Obama has certainly been a busy little bee -- though not too busy, it seems, to cover his tracks in all three cases. As well he might -- anybody with such a history has a few questions to answer. And Obama knows this full well, considering the effort he's put into ducking those exact questions since his campaign began.

But those questions must be asked and answered before November 4^th. Which, needless to say, is a job for Superwoman. Sarah Palin's relentless hammering brought the Ayers story back to the surface. She must now tie the three strands together: Ayers, ACORN, the New Party, and pound at it until it can no longer be ignored. (Of course, this will be an extremely upsetting experience for Kathleen Parker and David Brooks, but that can't be helped.)

If the three can be bundled, and the resulting package adequately presented to the American people, Barack Obama is through. American voters have made it clear time and again that they have no use for the political extremes of either left or right. Obama plainly suffers, at best, from a weakness for crackpot left-wing politics, and at worst from a yearning to create a revolutionary situation in American society. The first reveals an immature personality, one easily led and given to romantic concepts of how the world works. The second is evidence of serious maliciousness.

We require neither in the oval office.

And somewhere between right and left, there's Bill Kristol, urging a Monty Python: Now for something totally different. Who knows, maybe The Maverick will zig and not zag.

So why not go for Hail Mary number whateveritis? I can't help but remember another "Happy Warrior," Hubert Humphrey, who never won the big race. A fella named Richard Nixon whipped him soundly.

But what do I know? I'm the stupid schmuck who said the voters weren't stupid enough to vote for Bill Clinton. I was wrong then. Twice.

A Tale of Two Memoirs: McCain and Obama

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother scanning the headlines daily of the Noo Yawk Times and the Washington ComPost. Most days there's nothing there but the usual pro-Obama drumbeat and anti-McCain-Palin BS. Even though I'm reading them online, I invariably get a noseful of BS and have to fan the blow flies away as if I was flipping pages made of dead trees. Same ol', same ol' BS every single day.

But if nothing else, it's a daily reminder of how knee-jerk-left the so-called "mainstream" media is and how far in the tank for Obama they are, without any apology or even attempt at "fair and balanced" reporting of political news. Case in point, today's so-called review of John McCain's memoir of his five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, the best-selling "Faith of Our Fathers" which was made into a TV movie.

Obama's real-world experience spans his first gig as "community organizer" in Chicago, hand-picked by Bomb-Throwin' Bill Ayers to blow through $150 million in grant money with zip to show in results, a few years as a lawyer for ACORN among others and an almost invisible record as a state senator and first-term U.S. Senator. Never run nothin' but his mouth, yet he's allegedly written not just one, but two memoirs (one or both very likely ghost-written by Bill Ayers without credit) and Obama is acclaimed a literary star and prime Presidential timber.

John McCain's memoir openly credits his co-writer, campaign aide Mark Salter, which renders it all political puffery, so saith the NY Times.

But sometimes when you sort through a bucket of hogwash, you find a butterbean and such is the case with this NY Times McCain hitjob.

In the memoir, Mr. Salter helped sharpen that point into what became the new refrain of his boss’s political ascent. Mr. McCain had thought “all glory was self-glory,” but prison taught him “there are greater pursuits than self-seeking,” Mr. Salter wrote for the senator. “Glory belongs to the act of being constant to something greater than yourself, to a cause, to your principles.”

In the Navy archives, Mr. Salter found an oral history in which the senator’s father recounted his last meeting with his own father, on an American ship in Tokyo Bay at the end of World War II.

“Son,” the first Admiral McCain had told the second, “there is no greater thing than to die for the principles — for the country and the principles that you believe in.”

After you sort through the NY-Times-title-speak hogwash of "Mr. Salter said Mr. McCain's grandfather said to Mr. McCain's father," the principles in "Faith of Our Fathers" still shine through: There is a glory greater than self-seeking in being ready to die for your country.

So let me ask in NY-Times-title-speak, just what principles does "Mr. Obama" believe in? Hope? Change? Hope in what? Change to what?

The quotes that explain the entire financial meltdown

For those who want a smoking gun to show the genesis of the financial collapse, this short sequence from a longer video I posted this week will do it. Clinton HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo announced a settlement of a lending discrimination complaint with Accubanc, a Texas lender whose prerequisites for mortgages came under attack from “community organizers” at the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission and the city of Dallas. I clipped out this sequence to underscore its importance:

Here, in fact, is the genesis of the problem, the ideology that created the monster. Cuomo, the Clinton administration, and Congress believed they had the right and the power to determine acceptable risk for the lenders, rather than lenders determining it for themselves in a free market. Even while imposing risk standards on lenders, Cuomo admits that he expects a higher default rate on the new loans — which is why the lenders didn’t want to write them in the first place.

In other words, the CRA didn’t get used to fight discrimination, but to force lenders to give money to high-risk borrowers for political purposes. And Cuomo knew it.

That was the political arrogance at the heart of the collapse. However, the CRA was more a sideshow than the actual problem. When Congress decided that enforcement alone wouldn’t generate enough mortgages to boost their political fortunes, they had Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac eliminate the risk entirely for lenders through the purchase of the subprime loans. Without that risk and with almost-guaranteed short-term profits of subprime loans, lenders went wild while Fannie and Freddie repackaged them as quasi-government bonds for investors.

While Democrats like Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi keep blaming “greed” for the collapse, it was Democrats like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd building that “greed” into the system in order to drive the subprime lending market. And it was Democrats like Frank, Dodd, Maxine Waters, and Lacy Clay who suggested that regulators like Armando Falcon were racists for blowing the whistle on the Ponzi scheme they created.

The Democrats decided, as Michelle says, that mortgages were a civil right, and wouldn’t cost the American taxpayers a dime. How well is that working out, America? And now, the question you have to ask yourselves is this: Do you want the nation’s economic policies run by Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, and Frank for the next two years?

Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd and Frank, just the crew to take us back into the Great Depression.

The next time you hear a friend tell you that this race isn't important because he/she thinks the media is too biased, or that Sen. McCain isn't being tough enough on Obama, or because people seem to want "change" I want you to ask them if it's ok then to sit back and do nothing and allow the most extreme liberal into the White House in our nation's history?

To those of you who are thinking of throwing in the towel yourself, I want you to stop and think about what I just wrote -- and then ask yourself if you can think of any President in our nation's history who was more of a radical liberal than Barack Obama would be?

When you look at the people that Barack Obama has chosen to associate himself with, you get a sense for what an Obama administration would be like -- the people he would tap to help run this nation.

Obama spent years working with former Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers on education issues in Chicago. So you know the type of person we can expect to see as Secretary of Education.

Obama opposed taking military action against America's enemy (al-Qaida in Iraq) yet wanted to bomb Pakistan at a time they were working with us to defeat Islamic terrorists. Would it therefore be at all surprising to see a Secretary of State or Defense be someone like Obama fundraiser Jodie Evans? Evans is one of the co-founders of the Marxist, far-left organization, Code Pink, which traveled to Iraq and gave over $600,000 to the families of terrorists who killed Americans.

What post would someone like Revered Jeremiah Wright get? Barack Obama thought it was just grand to listen to this guy offer spiritual advice for 20-years, and we all know that Obama would still be a close friend and supporter of Rev. Wright if it weren't for the stink that talk radio and Fox News Channel made about Wright's racism and anti-Americanism.

Who will Obama put on the Supreme Court? You know it's going to be someone who is an abortion radical, and opponent of 2nd Amendment rights. Can you imagine all of the high-profile cases decided by close votes on the Court that will now swing towards judicial activism and leftist ideologies with Obama-appointed Supreme Court Justices creating a new majority bloc on the court?

Can you imagine the type of person Obama would appoint as ambassador to the United Nations? I mean here is Mister "World Citizen" himself, Barack Obama regularly apologizing for America and acting ashamed of our legacy and accomplishments in the world. Now he'd have the power to have the United States represented by a Blame America First apologist who would be only too happy to have the UN issue edicts scolding America and telling us how how we are to behave on the world stage.

Are we to give up now, and allow Barack Obama to appoint someone from ACORN to run the Federal Elections Commission?

Folks, I'm not trying to scare you -- I'm trying to get you to wake up. You don't have to wonder about who Obama associates himself with and what kind of agenda he has had. It's all there on the record for everyone to see: Barack Obama is a militant leftist, who hangs out with very bad people who say and do things that are very bad to this country.

I love these United States of America to much to sit back and do nothing and to allow a man like this to be President and Commander in Chief.

I cannot subject our military men and women to four years of saluting Barack Obama as their Commander in Chief.

We must fight on, and realize the power we have to change the nation and change the world when we are all committed to the fight.

A lifelong Democrat who has held political office and been a committeeman, Philip Berg, has brought suit over the real questions raised by the absence of a valid Obama birth certificate. His narrative of the various questions Obama has refused to answer is devastating. Graphics and sound are well-deployed to avoid tedium as factual data is conveyed in a way that allows viewers to absorb it. When he contrasts Obama's behavior when challenged (use perfectly valid legal technicalities to delay) with John McCain's full disclosure of all documentary evidence under a similar challenge (remember the flap over his birth in the Panama Canal Zone? -- who raised those questions, anyway?), there is no doubt in a viewer's mind that there is something seriously wrong here.

Someone with the unlikely name of Molotov Mitchell has produced a 10 minute and 52 second video [watch it below] that could well change the terms of the election -- if enough people watch it. Illuminati Productions has posted it to YouTube. They have provided the voting public a very professionally and engagingly done video generation equivalent of a long detailed article in a place like American Thinker.

It makes accessible to the general public some of the serious questions about Obama's citizenship status that have been vetted almost exclusively in the conservative web world. You can't get most voters to focus on print media in order to entertain a series of hard questions on what seems like a far-fetched notion. Especially those voters who rely on the Big Media. They figure that if this were true, they would have heard about it from the old familiar faces.

But you can get people to watch 11 minutes of interesting video raising a slew of questions for Obama, in fact cornering him, on the question of his birth, citizenship, and eligibility for office as POTUS under the Constitution. Especially if people start talking about the video. It's called viral distribution. A friend emails an Obama-supporting friend and dares him or her to watch.

Take 11 minutes and watch it. Then pass it along to any voter you know. Last chance to win.

Hanson says 'It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings'

President Obama?! God help us all, it's looking more likely daily for one reason and one reason only. Panic. We're in the middle of something here that nobody seems to know how to end. It just sucks all the air out of a political campaign and sanity leaves along with it. 1929. Depression.

Is it happening again? If it does, we can just lean over and kiss our behinds goodbye. Maybe Obama won't be such a terrible President after all, but it won't matter if the bottom really does fall out because none of us will have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out of. But. If.

There's always a but. Usually followed by an if. Nothing is certain in this life but death and taxes.

The fat lady ain't sung yet. She does seem to be warbling, warming up for the final aria.

But if... the rescue plan here and worldwide finally kicks in. If Wall Street finally gets over it's panic party and investors open up their Swiss accounts and start buying stocks again.

Suddenly, the sun will be shining again and voters will get their heads out of their behinds.

Then we will look around and start paying attention to this election and consider who to vote for with our common sense instead of our fears. And Victor Davis Hanson will say "I told you so."

Yet for all the gloom, there are several reasons why this race is by no means over...

It is still possible that, by the week before the election, there will be a sense of respite rather than continued anger and panic — and any day in which hysteria is not the topic of the day benefits McCain. In this regard, McCain must keep reminding in simple fashion that Freddie and Fannie were catalysts that drew in the Wall Street sharks: crooked officials cooked the books to get mega-bonuses; they got away with their crimes by lavishing money on mostly Democratic legislators (including Obama); and hand-in-glove they all covered — and still are covering — their tracks under a reprehensible politically correct cynicism.

Iraq is no longer the contentious issue of the primaries where Democratic candidates outdid each other in predicting failure, but mirabile dictu turning out to be a clear American victory. No one can now believe that withdrawal by March 2008, as Sen. Obama once advocated, would have been anything but an utter calamity. McCain needs to continue to emphasize the dire consequences of accepting such a defeat. The military is not broken, but now the most experienced, battle-hardened force in the world. Iraq is not, as Joe Biden once demanded, trisected into feuding fiefdoms, but an emerging consensual state. The more Iraq is out of the news, the more the growing public acceptance that it is becoming a success. McCain should continue to ask: Did Americans want victory in November 2008 or defeat in March 2008?

The Ayers controversy is cited by the in-the-tank media as signs of McCain’s desperation. Perhaps. But amid the tsk-tsking, there are also certain deer-in-the-headlights moments among Obama’s handlers.

Why? There are simply too many ACORNs, Ayers, Khalidis, Pflegers, Wrights, et al. not to suggest a pattern unbecoming of a future President of the United States. Obama’s past statements about his relationship with Ayers (and others) simply cannot be reconciled with the factual circumstances of their long association. McCain must focus on Ayers between 2001–2005. Then in the climate of national worry following 9/11, Ayers was on recent record as lamenting that he had not set off enough bombs, and yet until 2005 still in contact with Obama — about what and why, voters might wish to know.

When Iraq and Wall Street were off the front page, Obama went moribund in the last months of the Democratic primary. Why? Not because of racism, or even public weariness with Obama’s hope and change fluff, or his flip-flops, or occasional striking ignorance about basic history and geography. He finally began to wear on the public — as he continues to when events of the day do not smother the attention of the voter — for two reasons.

First, the public tires of all the media slant, the celebrity rants, and the shills in popular culture, that in concert hourly berate, beg, threaten, and ridicule voters on behalf of Obama. We are supposed to accept Obama’s apotheosis, replete with Latinate seal, Greek columns, biblical injunctions about the seas and atmosphere, and prophesies that he is The One whom we have been waiting for. The creepy effect of ordering us to accept our own salvation becomes cumulative. So there is a quiet unease among the voters, as there always is in America, when someone finger-points and lectures them what they must do — or else!

Second, for all the two years of nonstop campaigning, Obama somehow still remains an unknown — and for apparently good reason. He has almost no record in the Senate to speak of — other than one as America’s most predictably partisan and liberal Senator. What is known of his Chicago associates is not reassuring, and so the only defense can be silence rather than exegesis. No one knows anything of his record at Columbia University, how he got into Harvard Law School, or what he was doing until he reached Harvard, or exactly what he did as a community organizer in Chicago, or how a person with no record of legal scholarship was about to be offered tenure at the Chicago Law School. Each doubt in and of itself is of little import, but again in aggregate even the generalities make voters uneasy — especially when they hear of fraud among voter registration drives, swarming radio stations to stifle those critical of Obama, and threatened lawsuits to yank pro-McCain ads.

The odds always were against McCain. And the outcome in these last few days may be seem contingent in large part on breaking news beyond the candidates’ control. Yet McCain still has it within his own power to win the election. Obama’s view of America is mostly rosy emulation of the European Union; McCain’s is to restore fiscal sanity, keep our defenses strong, and ensure that American exceptionalism remains a fact, rather than descends into an empty slogan. In that context, it makes no sense to sneer at McCain for being behind, but a great deal to hope that he isn’t.

I would just like to warn gun owners and especially hunters to NOT BUY a movie on the rack at Wal-Mart this week called "The Iron Giant" for your kids. It looks like a great movie and overall it actually is, but it demonizes deer hunters and guns in general. It is THE WORST I have seen to date. The focus on the gun and say "guns kill" over and over again. The whole point of the movie is that the robot doesn't want to be a gun.

If you don't want to be surprized by a movie you innocently bought for your kids, avoid it, really. They could have introduced the concept of death to the big robot any number of ways, but the Hollywood elitists chose to use deer hunters.

These hypocrite trained monkeys probably went to lunch at Arbys everyday to eat a cow that someone else killed for them, WITHOUT A GUN.

Blech blech blech why can't these idiots understand that America has real problems, and none of them have to do with hunters or guns.

Obama's buddy, Bomb-throwing Bill Ayers, makes the ludicrous claim that his bombs never hurt anybody. B.S.! Nobody but the people who died in the bombs set off in police stations and in federal buildings in our nation's capitol. In this clip from a documentary, he says "from the moment at the townhouse on" which refers to the bomb that went off accidentally and destroyed the bombmaking workshop where the Weather Underground were building nail bombs to explode at U.S. Army base in the servicemen's club. Members of the Weathermen were killed in the accidental explosion, but that was all the justice that was ever served. Ayers and his bloodthirsty wife, Bernadine Dohrn, got off scot-free through a legal loophole.

McCain promises to attack ACORN and Wright

Campaigning in Wisconsin today, John McCain and Sarah Palin again took issue with Barack Obama's association with Bill Ayers, former Weather Underground terrorist. But a black man supporting McCain urged him to also challenge Obama about his former pastor, the not-very-rev. Jeremiah Wright, and about his ties to ACORN, the national voting registation group under investigation in several states.

The next question came from a black McCain supporter, who reminded McCain of the candidate's plea at the convention for his supporters to do everything possible to ensure a victory. The supporter said: "I doubt that anyone has taken, pardon me, the ass-whoopin' I have taken for doing that." He then implored McCain to go after Barack Obama at the next debate and asked him to raise ACORN and Reverend Wright. "I am begging you, sir," he said, as the crowd stood and applauded.

"Yes, I'll do that," McCain responded, before promising to offer "a positive plan for America's economy."

Better late than never, I always say. What's he got to lose, but an election?

Watching the Palin media watchers

Bob Owens of Confederate Yankee blog reports for Pajamas Media on Sarah Palin's rally in Greenville, NC, at the campus of East Carolina University. But though Owens reports Palin gave a rousing speech, his main reason for being there was to watch the media's coverage.

7:27 PM The traveling media stampedes in, laptops fired up and ready to go. Palin’s motorcade must have arrived.

7:32 PM Palin comes out, and the crowd loves her. Warms up with “Sportstown, USA” and ECU’ football’s upsets over West Virginia and Virginia Tech… “you know something about underdogs.” Mentions Biden: Biden gets booed. Good speech so far, steady, and well delivered.

7:38 PM “Despite what Barack Obama says”… Boos, “Nobama!” McCain will give healthcare tax credits to help you pay for coverage. It’s broadly the same speech that she gave this morning in Florida, but she seems to be feeding off the crowd — giving off a lot of energy, considering how long her day has been. I can’t make it out, but several of the traveling journalists have the same screens up on their laptops. I’m guessing that it is a copy of the speech, and they’re making sure she’s not going off script.

7:43 PM Looking down under the camera crew setup, I notice a scowl on the faces of a couple of crew members when Palin thanked the military. I hope that her comments weren’t the cause of the dirty looks. One guy in the traveling crew packs up his laptop and leaves… I guess he’s confident he won’t hear anything new, and perhaps he’s right as far as the speech goes, but what about the crowd? Don’t they care about the crowd reaction? Apparently not.

7:48 PM Lots of press are checking their email and websurfing now, with the The Trail and Bloglines being two sites I can make out immediately. Several others are frantically typing away on Blackberries… When Palin gets to line about Obama starting his career in the living room of a domestic terrorist, crowd loves it. The media looks around briefly, then seems to lose interest in Palin.

7:53 PM Angry-looking, local female journalist in front of me is pounding on her keyboard. I could make out normal notes, plus a comment about Palin: “sounds like a robot, but the crowd loves her.” Hmmm… maybe it’s you, ma’am? A few other media are now websurfing — Yahoo News and the News and Observer’s Under the Dome blog.

7:56 PM MSBNC’s First Read joins the reading list. Somebody else is on a site with a color scheme and layout that looks suspiciously like the Huffington Post. An Asian man — presumably a journalist — looks at the crowd with an arched eyebrow, but I don’t know why. I heard him speak later to his companion, but can’t make out the language.

7:58 PM The speech is now over, and Palin walks down into the crowd to shake hands with folks on the floor. Shania Twain’s “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face” plays her off. Nice touch.

There were no protests or hecklers.

“Watching the watchers” is an interesting game to play. The media is used to being the ones deciding the story, but don’t want to be the story themselves. I expected some of what I saw last night — the taking of phone calls during speeches and the sometimes fevered text messaging during the speech — but I must tell you I was surprised when some of the press simply stopped paying attention shortly after Palin made the Obama-Bill Ayers connection in the speech. They appeared to have been waiting for another “gotcha” moment, hoping for someone in the crowd to threaten Obama or call him a terrorist.

Some of the web surfing during the speech was no doubt legitimate. I suspect both MSNBC’s [6] First Read and and Washington Post’s [7] The Trail were being updated from the press row, and the authors were merely checking to make sure that what they posted came across correctly. The journalist reading Bloglines , a news feed aggregator, may have also been doing precisely what he should. But the Huffington Post?

At least it wasn’t Kos.

But the guy who packed up and left the press row after Palin got past the Obama-Ayers connection when he didn’t hear anything inflammatory from the crowd was a point of concern. So was the fact that so many journalists in front of me — perhaps a third of them, or even a little more — simply began tuning Palin and the crowd out after that point.

I understand the life on the campaign trail must be a grueling marathon of unending travel and 14-hour days. It has to wear everyone down, and people start to cut corners. The press allows themselves this as long as they get the broad strokes correct enough.

It does seem hypocritical, though, that these same frayed journalists then attack politicians on the same schedule, for even the smallest gaffe.

It’s a clear double standard.

But then, we’re getting used to that.

What's A 'Fairly Conventional' Christian Faith?

I'm sick of politics, ain't you? Let's have some preaching for a break. Here's Rev. James Meeks.


Rev. James also throws a little politics in with his preaching and any man who gives Chicago Mayor James Daley a hard time can't be all bad. Of course, I gotta admit I wouldn't be posting a preaching video instead of writing about politics if Barack Obama wasn't looking like such a sure bet for the White House while John McCain and Sarah Palin are looking like they're headed for the outhouse come Nov. 4. But that's the way it looks right now.

Or at least that's what the "experts" in the media keep telling us about the polls. Steven M. Warshawsky at American Thinker still stands by his prediction that Obama will lose. He explains why the "experts" might be wrong as he goes into detail on what recent polls really show. But let's just take a break from politics for a bit.

So let's talk theology a while. Theology is defined as "the study of God." Some famous atheist once described a theologian (by definition a student of theology) as "someone who's searching for a black cat in a coal mine that ain't there." Well I have no formal training in theology but I do know a little something about "the study of God" by reading and studying God's best-seller for 31+ years, The Holy Bible.

I got saved, born again, washed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, on Feb. 28, 1977, when I was 29. See my testimony page for the full story about what happened that day. And as a Christian, I have spent a fair amount of time daily since then reading and studying God's Word, because that's how I came to be saved, by reading and believing what God said about how to be saved in His Holy Bible.

Being an evangelical, fundamentalist, conservative Christian, I believe every single word in the Bible is truth, God's truth, from "In the beginning..." in Genesis 1:1 to the last "Amen" in Revelation 22:21. I've read and studied it from cover to cover several times -- I haven't kept count of how many times I've read it all -- but my study continues daily. I may not understand it all and as a fallible human I realize I never will until this corruptible flesh puts on incorruption and then and only then will I understand it all. But right now I believe it's all true.

My sort-of life verse is 1 Corinthians 13:12, from which I took the title for Bible study and social commentary columns, Seen Through A Glass Darkly, which I wrote for various newspapers I worked for during my 25+ years career in print journalism. I also write Bible Q&A columns.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall know even as also I am known.

The "then" Paul refers to is the day all Christians shall see Jesus Christ "face to face" clearly, not through a dark glass as now, but clearly.

OK, enough about my theology or my understanding about what it means to be a Christian who believes the entire Word of God is truth.

Let's talk about another fella's "faith journey" as the popular description today goes. This fella was interviewed in 2004 on that topic.

First question: "What do you believe?"

His answer:

"I am a Christian..." (he begins, then is interrupted in the cafe where the interview takes place) before turning his attention directly back to the question.

"So, I have a deep faith," (he) continues. "I'm rooted in the Christian tradition. I believe that there are many paths to the same place, and that is a belief that there is a higher power, a belief that we are connected as a people.

The reporter reveals her own knowledge of the Bible with her reply to his statement as she asks him to explain his "unlikely" theology.

It's perhaps an unlikely theological position for someone who places his faith squarely at the feet of Jesus to take, saying essentially that all people of faith -- Christians, Jews, Muslims, animists, everyone -- know the same God.

That depends, (he) says, on how a particular verse from the Gospel of John, where Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but by me," is heard.

That depends on how it is heard? Is that sorta like Big Bill's sworn testimony in court: "That depends on what the meaning of is 'is' is"?

How else can you hear John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth and the life"? Jesus didn't say "a way, a truth and a life." "The" is exclusive. And if any doubt remained to the exclusivity of His statement, He clarified it even further by saying "No one comes to the Father but by me."

If there's some other way to "hear" what Jesus said about His way being the only way to salvation and to come to the Father, 'splain it.

OK, enough with the charade. You've probably figured out by now that I'm quoting a 2004 interview with Barack Obama by Chicago Sun-Times columnist Cathleen Falsani. Obama had just won the Democrat primary for U.S. Senate and with only Alan Keyes for an opponent in the fall election he was a shoo-in to win. So he sat down for this interview with the friendly Chicago hometown reporter on his "faith."

Obama's "faith" became an issue in June when the brown stuff hit the fan as his 20+ years pastor, the not-very-rev. Jeremiah Wright became a youtube celebrity. Obama expressed puzzlement at first over the controversy, describing black-liberation-theology as his "fairly conventional faith."

But after making "the most important speech on race since Martin Luther King Jr." defending his pastor and refusing to disown him, the Wright controversy refused to go away. So Obama chunked him under the campaign bus where he joined a host of others gone before, including his own white grandmother whom he chunked there during that "most important speech on race" which was also then disowned.

But let's get back to the interview.

Obama is unapologetic in saying he has a "personal relationship with Jesus Christ." As a sign of that relationship, he says, he walked down the aisle of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ in response to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's altar call one Sunday morning about 16 years ago.

The politician could have ended his spiritual tale right there, at the point some people might assume his life changed, when he got "saved," transformed, washed in the blood. But Obama wants to clarify what truly happened.

"It wasn't an epiphany," he says of that public profession of faith. "It was much more of a gradual process for me. I know there are some people who fall out. Which is wonderful. God bless them.... I think it was just a moment to certify or publicly affirm a growing faith in me."

These days, he says, he attends the 11 a.m. Sunday service at Trinity in the Brainerd neighborhood every week -- or at least as many weeks as he is able. His pastor, Wright, has become a close confidant.

An epiphany is a moment of clarity, a moment when the light breaks through and you realize some significant truth. I don't want to quibble over another person's personal testimony, but when someone says he never had that moment, that raises a big red flag of doubt with me.

But let us move on (no political pun intended) past that.

Obama says he reads the Bible, though not as regularly as he'd like, now that he's on the campaign trail. But he does find time to pray.

"It's not formal, me getting on my knees," he says. "I think I have an ongoing conversation with God.... I'm constantly asking myself questions about what I'm doing, why I am doing it.

"The biggest challenge, I think, is always maintaining your moral compass."

So he reads the Bible and prays, but not formally on his knees, and sees his biggest challenge as "maintaining your moral compass."

So who helps him maintain his "moral compass" in addition to the not-yet-disowned pastor Wright, who "has become a close confidant"?

Obama cites two other pastor friends in Southside Chicago, "the Rev. Michael Pfleger" (remember the spooky white Catholic priest who ranted about Hillary in Rev. Wright's pulpit?) and another black-liberation-theology preacher in Chicago very similar to Wright and Pfleger.

Another person Obama says he seeks out for spiritual counsel is state Sen. James Meeks, who is also the pastor of Chicago's Salem Baptist Church. The day after Obama won the primary in March, he stopped by Salem for Wednesday-night Bible study. (See Meeks video above.)

Obama wraps up the interview with one more "unlikely" bit of theology. He doesn't believe in hell and he's not sure at all about heaven.

Obama admits it's not easy for politicians to talk about faith.

"Part of the reason I think it's always difficult for public figures to talk about this is that the nature of politics is that you want to have everybody like you and project the best possible traits onto you," he says. "Oftentimes, that's by being as vague as possible, or appealing to the lowest common denominators. The more specific and detailed you are on issues as personal and fundamental as your faith, the more potentially dangerous it is.

"The difficult thing about any religion, including Christianity, is that at some level there is a call to evangelize and proselytize. There's the belief, certainly in some quarters, that if people haven't embraced Jesus Christ as their personal savior, they're going to hell."

Obama doesn't believe he, or anyone else, will go to hell.

But he's not sure if he'll be going to heaven, either.

"I don't presume to have knowledge of what happens after I die," he says. "When I tuck in my daughters at night, and I feel like I've been a good father to them, and I see in them that I am transferring values that I got from my mother and that they're kind people and that they're honest people, and they're curious people, that's a little piece of heaven."

In rebuttal to that, I'll go to the only source that's absolutely authoritative about the Christian faith, The Bible. Jesus Christ believed in hell during his earthly ministry here and preached about hell a whole lot more than he ever mentioned heaven, which he also believed in.

In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus tells the story of "a certain rich man," indicating it is not a parable but the truth about an actual person.

"...the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments... And he cried and said... I am tormented in this flame." Luke 16:22-24.

Hell is real and its flames are real, too, just as real as heaven is real. And we're all going to one or the other for eternity, politicians, too.

A Republican redneck church-lady I know here in North Carolina read Obama's "deep faith" article and wrote me the following question:

What does deeply spiritual mean? Reminds me of the time when (her oldest son) Jeremy was quite small and we happened upon a Hindu camp on the Washington Mall, they had a herd of cows alongside them.

I tell Jeremy that these people worship the cows to which he responds, "Let me get this straight -- these people worship cheeseburgers?" Humanist fools.

My response to her question, "What does deeply spiritual mean?" (If you'll allow me to quote myself):

Hitler was “deeply spiritual.” He honestly believed a "spirit" had empowered him to take over the world. Really. He nearly did.

One of the more interesting books I read back in my college days was one I ran across entitled "The Occult History of Adolph Hitler." (Amazon has 67 books on Hitler and the occult. I'm not sure of the exact title of the book I read 37+ years ago in college.) I wasn't a Christian then, but that book scared me spitless. It certainly cured my stupid adolescent curiosity about Nazis and the Third Reich.

It cited records of seances and pretty much outright devil worship by Hitler and the inner circle of his Nazi party leadership and tells a chilling story supposedly recounted by Hitler himself of a pivotal event in his life before he came to power as chancellor of Germany.

Hitler said he was visiting a museum in Austria where he saw a spear point that was supposed to be the head of the spear the Roman soldier used to pierce the side of Jesus Christ to verify his death while hanging on his cross on the hill of Golgotha, outside the walls of Jerusalem. Hitler said a "spirit" entered him at that moment and he somehow "knew" he would become chancellor and would found "The Third Reich."

One of his first acts as chancellor was to "liberate" Austria and reunite it to Germany. And the book said the day he entered Vienna as conqueror, he took possession of the spearpoint from the museum and kept it in his possession right up until the day of his death in 1945.

Don't get me wrong now, I'm not calling Barack Obama "Hitler," even though the lunatic left has been calling President Bush that for eight years. The comparison I'm making is that Hitler could fairly be described as "deeply spiritual." Whether that's good or bad depends entirely on what spirit we're talking about. The Spirit of the Lord, the Holy Spirit, is always good. The spirit of the devil, Satan, is always evil.

I'm talking about theology here, not politics. And from the perspective of the Bible Belt, Obama's "faith" is not "fairly conventional."

And as we say down South (and probably up North, too) if the shoe fits, wear it.
